Squares
The work in this category is grouped not by theme, but obviously by shape. There is something about the uniformity and rigidity of a square that is appealing, and evocative. We talk about being boxed it, or thinking outside the box. The reference is really one that alludes to that regimental attitude of maybe conformity, but also inflexibility. Yet there is something almost comforting too. Given total freedom most feel anomic and alienated. Without direction, generally many know not how to behave, act or think. That is the box, the square.
Though I tend to do most of my work in the lens, there are times when I look at an image and find that I can see it in a different way. There are of course, limitations to the mechanics of a camera no matter how expensive. Cropping the image creates a new image, a new perspective, a new message. Imposing the rigidity of a square adds further dimension and meaning to the cropping.
