Much of my work is influenced by the Colour Field painters of the late nineteen fifties and sixties. The grids of Agnes Martin can be found in many of my images, but none referent this artistic school more explicitly than this series of “Sing Posts”. Ripped posters on lamp posts, hoardings, fences and other artefacts of an urban society are subject to the pestering of guerrilla advertising. Weathered and ripped, faded and worn the colour flows off the edges, and takes forms which are not recognisable sometimes. Rauschenberg, Martin, Newman, and even to pop artists such as Lichtenstein and Warhol influence the image creation – no, discovery here.
It is the recording of a particular aesthetic in particular places. There are two distinct sets in these pages. The first set from the streets of Toronto and the second while travelling in Berlin. The two are distinctly different and both equally fascinating.
